BRCA+, Beauty & Resilience: Why October Means More to Me

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Everywhere you look it’s pink ribbons and reminders to book your mammogram. And for me—it’s deeply personal.

At the age of 36, I received life-changing news: I tested positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation. At the time, BRCA testing was still largely guided by maternal family history. Since my maternal side didn’t show a history of breast cancer, I had to advocate for myself—and pay out of pocket—to get tested.

After the birth of my second child, I chose to have my ovaries removed during a scheduled C-section. Then in 2016, with a one year old and a two and a half year old, I underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. These proactive measures reduced my risk dramatically, and I will forever be grateful to my OB-GYN who stood by me and pushed for the care I needed.

I was given the gift of time.

I know not everyone gets that chance. And that’s why I share my story— for awareness, empowerment, and education.

What Can You Do?

If you or someone you love has a history of breast or ovarian cancer, ask about BRCA testing. Talk to your doctor. Trust your gut. Advocate fiercely for yourself.

✅ Schedule that mammogram.

✅ Do your monthly breast self-exams.

✅ Ask about your family history—even your paternal side.

✅ Learn about genetic testing (even if insurance says no).

This month Kalon is giving back

At Kalon, we believe beauty is more than skin deep—and resilience is one of the most powerful forms of beauty there is.

Sandy Cassanelli, whom we lost in January, was the Queen of resilience. We are honored to partner with her charity, the Breast Friends Fund, to carry on her legacy.

Join us this October, when Kalon Medical Spa is offering a special donation match. Any donation you make to the Breast Friends Fund (proof of donation required, with a maximum of $200 per person) will be matched as a discount, showing our commitment to supporting metastatic breast cancer research and clincial trials.

TOGETHER we will find a cure.
